Dr. Nicole Mirkin
Forensic Psychologist Providing Strategic Consultation and Coaching in High-Conflict Family Systems
Dr. Mirkin helps parents navigate complex custody and child welfare cases by drawing on more than a decade of experience conducting court-appointed forensic psychological evaluations used by courts to determine the best interests of the child.
Dr. Mirkin holds a doctorate in psychology and a master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and School Counseling. With over 16 years of professional experience, her career has focused on the systems that influence decisions in custody and child welfare matters, with work spanning private practice, academic settings, and forensic evaluation.
Earlier in her career, Dr. Mirkin worked in school settings supporting children and families, developing expertise in child development, family dynamics, and the impact of school environments on family stress, conflict, and learning needs.
She later served as a court-appointed forensic evaluator in Family Court across multiple jurisdictions and was retained by child protective services agencies (CPS/DCFS) to conduct evaluations in high-conflict custody and dependency cases. Evaluations addressed parental fitness, parent–child relationships, co-parenting dynamics, attachment and bonding, best-interest determinations, termination of parental rights, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, substance abuse, alienation, and adoption. Her work involved psychological testing, clinical interviews, extensive records review, and comprehensive reports to inform best-interest determinations.
Through this work, Dr. Mirkin saw how easily parents can be misunderstood and how quickly credibility can be undermined in court. Recognizing this gap, she shifted from clinical practice to focus full-time on consulting and coaching parents navigating custody and child welfare cases. Drawing on her forensic expertise, she works with parents nationwide providing individualized support to help them understand how their cases are evaluated, avoid common missteps, organize documentation, prepare for hearings, and navigate court-ordered processes strategically.
In addition to her consulting work, Dr. Mirkin writes about professional identity, institutional systems, and personal rebuilding through her writing project, Psychologist Interrupted, where she reflects on the intersection of professional life, personal experience, and the systems that shape both.
